Check MyEngine Light
P0024Starts at: Get it checked this week

Intake camshaft timing is too far behind (bank 2)

The camshaft that usually runs the intake valves on the second side of the engine is opening them later than the computer asked. Bank 2 is the side without cylinder 1.

Engine timingFix: Moderate, basic tools

What usually causes it

  1. Low, dirty or wrong oil, because the timing adjuster runs on engine oil
  2. A stuck or dirty oil control valve, the small part that sends oil to the timing adjuster
  3. A worn or stretched timing chain
  4. A worn timing adjuster, also called a cam phaser

Check this first

Check the oil level with the dipstick. Low or very old oil is a common cause, and an oil change sometimes clears it.

What to watch for

  • Rough idle, stalling or weak power
  • A rattle from the front of the engine, most often right after a cold start
  • The oil warning light coming on
