Check MyEngine Light

Privacy

Last updated: November 4, 2026. This policy covers the website checkmyenginelight.com and the Android app Check Engine Light: OBD2 Scan by Harris Apps Studio. Questions: hello@checkmyenginelight.com.

The short version

The website

If you join the launch list, we keep your email address with our email provider (Brevo) only to send you the launch message. Ask us and we remove it. Code lookups on the website run in your browser and are not saved. We do not use ad trackers.

How we see what works

We use Microsoft Clarity to see how visitors use the website, like clicks, scrolling and which pages get read, so we can make it easier to use. Clarity uses cookies and similar technology and hides what you type into forms. Microsoft handles that data under its privacy statement.

Share counts

If you use a share button, or open a link someone shared, our counter records that a share or visit happened, using a random referral code and no name, email or other personal details, and may store a small cookie so a referral can be credited. It does not record what you read or what you enter in forms.

The app

Your account

The app starts with an anonymous account, so you do not need to give us your name or email to scan. If you later add an email or Google sign in, we keep that email to let you sign back in.

Car and scan data

When you scan, the app reads data from your car through your OBD2 adapter: trouble codes, readiness monitors, the VIN stored in the car, and mileage or distance values when the car shares them. We keep your saved cars, scan results and reminders in your account so you can see them later and on a new phone.

Explanations and Quote Check

To write a full explanation, our server sends the codes, your year, make, model and engine, your mileage and your ZIP code to an AI service (Anthropic's Claude) and gets the explanation back. For Quote Check, the estimate photos go the same way. Photos are deleted from our server after the check unless you choose to save the report. We do not send your name or email with these requests.

VIN and recalls

We look up your VIN and recalls with the free NHTSA databases through our server.

Bluetooth

The app uses Bluetooth only to talk to your OBD2 adapter. It does not use your location.

Purchases

Subscriptions and the Used-Car Check are bought through Google Play. We use RevenueCat to know which features you have paid for. We never see your card number.

Crash reports and counts

The app sends crash reports and simple counts, like how many people finished a first scan, so we can fix problems and improve the app. These are not used for ads.

Who we share with

Only the services that run the product: Supabase (our database and server), Anthropic (explanations and Quote Check), NHTSA (VIN and recalls), Google Play and RevenueCat (purchases), Google Firebase (crash reports), Brevo (launch email) and Microsoft Clarity (how the website is used). Each one only gets what it needs for its job.

How long we keep it

We keep your account data until you delete it. Quote photos are deleted right after the check unless you save the report. Saved explanations for a kind of car may be kept without any link to you, so the next driver with the same codes on the same kind of car gets an answer faster.

Deleting your data

In the app: Garage, then Settings, then Delete my account. Or follow the steps on our delete account page. We delete your account and its data within 30 days, most of it right away.

Children

The app is for adults 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect data from children.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update this page and the date at the top.
