What usually causes it
- A failing coolant temperature sensor
- A thermostat (the valve that controls engine temperature) stuck open or partly open
- Low coolant or air in the cooling system
- A loose plug or damaged wiring
The coolant temperature sensor tells the computer how hot the engine is. Its reading does not match what the engine is doing.
Only when the engine is fully cool, look at the coolant level in the plastic tank. Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine.
We rate P0116 as Get it checked this week. It is not an emergency yet, but it can get worse. If the light starts flashing, stop driving soon.
Coolant temperature reading does not make sense. The coolant temperature sensor tells the computer how hot the engine is. Its reading does not match what the engine is doing.

The most common causes, in order: A failing coolant temperature sensor; A thermostat (the valve that controls engine temperature) stuck open or partly open; Low coolant or air in the cooling system; A loose plug or damaged wiring.
