What usually causes it
- A dirty air flow sensor
- An air leak in the intake hose after the sensor
- A clogged air filter
- A failing air flow sensor
The mass air flow (MAF) sensor measures how much air goes into the engine. Its reading does not fit what the engine is doing.
Check that the air filter is clean and the big air hose is tight with no cracks. A spray made to clean MAF sensors sometimes fixes a dirty one.
